Whats the best method for dying a 100% cotton jacket?
Question:
I want to dye a jacket black. It's original color is an olive green and it's 100% cotton bedford. The jacket was only available in this color, otherwise I would have just bought a black one. It's a military style jacket and is a fairly heavy material. I've never dyed anything before. What brand of dye should I use and will I have to worry about the dye running at all? Thanks for any help!
Answer:
If it's 100% cotton it should not be a problem. Wash the jacket first to get rid of the finish put on the fabric by the manufacturer. You can try some color remover but it may not work because of the industrial dye used. Go to the store and buy some RIT or Tintex brand black dye. Follow the directions on the package. Make sure you rinse the dye out until the water runs clear. Then wash it and see how much dye stays. If it is cotton it should dye relatively well. You can add more dye and try again if you are not satisfied with the results. And if after you hate it you can use color remover and most of it should come out. Good luck.
